Women's World Cup QuarterFinal Review

Okay. This has been a pretty damn epic week in the sports world. Am I right? First off, Quarterfinal play began in the FIFA Women's 2011 World Cup. The host nation (and favorite to win it all) was shockingly eliminated from the tournament before a sellout crowd of their home faithful in Wolfsburg by a score of 1-0 by the tenacious Japanese side who advance to the first Quarterfinal in the nation's World Cup history. Also, France surprised basically everyone by eliminating England in a penalty shoot-out. It came down to the final shot. Unfortunately, England Captain Faye White put it over the crossbar to justify France's advance to the Semi-finals. But, the one ace that trumps all this was the unbelievable story of the U.S.A vs Brazil match that concluded just hours ago. Things seemed bright for the U.S Ladies when a Brazil defender accidentally knocked the ball into the back of her own net to give the U.S a 1-0 lead after 1minute and 24 seconds. The U.S went into the half with this lead. But, things turned grim for the U.S in the second half. It all started when U.S defender Rachel Buheler tackled Brazil's best player, Marta inside the 18-yard box. Buelher was immediatley sent off for the (seemingly) harsh tackle. Brazil was given a penalty kick. Initally, U.S keeper Hope Solo saved the shot by Christian. However, the assistant referee called it back because a U.S defender moved into the box before the shot. This tome, Marta took the shot and bended it into the back of the net. At full time, the score was 1-1. This meant Extra Time. Brazil scored first in Extra Time when Marta scored a beautiful falling chip shot just ahead of Hope Solo to make it 2-1 Brazil. Time seemed to be running out for the Americans, who have never been eliminated before the Semi-Finals in their history. U.S seemed to be done. But, "At the death", U.S came through finally with seconds left in Extra Time, Megan Rapinoe served a beautiful ball to Abby Wombach, who was playing with a sore leg, headed it into the back of the net to tie the match up at 2 apiece. Extra Time ended this way, which meant penalties. *FLASHBACK* July 10th, 1999 Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Ca. U.S and China are tied at 1-1 after Extra Time and go to Penalties. On China's 3rd penalty shot, Briana Scurry made an amazing diving save to save the match for U.S . Then, Brandi Chastain calmly walked to the spot. She blasted the shot into the right side of the net to win the World Cup for the U.S. [Yes, that was the time she whipped her shirt] *BACK TO 2011* Both teams make their first 2 penalty shots. On Brazil's 3rd, U.S Goalie Hope Solo made an amazing diving save to her right to keep the Brazilians out. 2 shots later, Alie Krieger made her shot to give U.S the win!!! (Similar, right?) U.S advances to the Semi-Finals and will face France on Wed. Phew. Can't wait
